Drink Up! How Proper Hydration Fuels Your Fitness Journey (And Your Faith)

You know, after more than 30 years in the fitness industry, I’ve noticed something that catches a lot of people off guard: the single most overlooked factor in their training success isn’t fancy equipment or complicated workout programs—it’s something as simple as water.

But here’s the thing—hydration isn’t just about feeling refreshed during your workout. It’s about honoring the body God gave you.

The Body as God’s Temple

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

That word “honor” stuck with me when I started thinking deeply about fitness as faith. Proper hydration isn’t vanity—it’s stewardship. It’s one of the most fundamental ways we care for the temple we’ve been entrusted with.

How Much Water Do You Actually Need?

Let’s get practical. The National Academies of Sciences recommend about 124-135 ounces of daily fluid intake—that’s roughly 8-10 cups for most adults. But here’s a better rule I’ve used for decades: drink about half your body weight in ounces. If you weigh 180 pounds, that’s 90 ounces daily.

Now, if you’re actively training—and I hope you are!—you need more. When you’re sweating it out at the gym, every 15-20 minutes of activity means adding more water. I’ve seen clients transform their performance just by digging deeper on hydration.

Here’s the telltale sign: Your urine should be pale yellow, almost colorless. If it’s dark, you’re behind on hydration. If it’s clear, you might actually be drinking too much. There’s a sweet spot.

Male vs. Female: What’s Different?

Yes, there are some physiological differences. Men typically have about 60% of their body weight as water, while women average around 55%. This means men generally have a slightly higher baseline hydration need. But honestly? The bigger factors are activity level, climate, age, and overall health.

For my clients over 50—and I work with a lot of them both in-studio and online—hydration becomes even more critical. As we age, our thirst mechanism becomes less reliable. You might not feel thirsty, but your body needs that water.

What Proper Hydration Does For You

When you’re properly hydrated, your body performs like it’s supposed to:

  • Muscle performance improves dramatically. Muscles are 75% water. Dehydration means weaker contractions and faster fatigue.
  • Recovery accelerates. Water flushes metabolic waste from your muscles after training.
  • Injury risk drops. Dehydrated tissues are more prone to strains and sprains.
  • Mental clarity stays sharp. Even mild dehydration affects focus and mood.

I’ve trained clients for decades, and I can see the difference between someone who’s hydrating properly and someone who isn’t. The ones drinking enough water lift better, recover faster, and stay more consistent.

The Spiritual Connection

Here’s what I’ve come to understand: taking care of your body through proper hydration is an act of worship. It’s you saying, “God, I respect what You’ve made. I’m going to steward this temple well.”

Proverbs 14:30 says, “A peaceful heart gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” When you’re honoring your body with basics like hydration, you’re cultivating that peaceful heart. You’re aligning your physical actions with your spiritual values.
