Georgia summers do not play around — and after more than 30 years coaching men and women through every kind of weather this state can throw at us, I have learned a lot about what it actually takes to train safely and effectively once the heat and humidity set in. Outdoor exercise in summer is not something to avoid entirely. It is something to approach with more intelligence, more preparation, and more respect for what your body is genuinely dealing with physiologically when the temperature climbs into the 90s with humidity that makes it feel even hotter.
The good news is that the human body has a remarkable capacity to adapt to heat stress when given the right conditions and enough time. The challenge is that most people either push through summer heat without making any real adjustments, or they avoid outdoor exercise entirely out of fear of overheating. Neither approach is necessary once you understand the principles of safe summer training that I am going to walk through here — principles that have kept my clients training productively and safely through Georgia summers for decades.
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” — Psalm 91:1. Training wisely through the heat — finding the right time, the right pace, and the right shelter when needed — is simply good stewardship of the body God gave us.
Why Summer Heat Changes Everything About Exercise Physiology
Understanding what is actually happening inside your body during summer outdoor exercise helps explain why the same workout that feels manageable in March can feel genuinely dangerous in July. When core body temperature rises during exercise, the body activates its primary cooling mechanism — increased blood flow to the skin and increased sweat production. Both of these responses compete directly with the blood flow your working muscles need to perform the exercise itself.
This is called cardiovascular drift — as exercise duration continues in heat, heart rate gradually increases even at the same workout intensity because the heart is working harder to simultaneously supply blood to working muscles and to the skin for cooling. Studies on cardiovascular drift show heart rate can increase by 10 to 15 beats per minute over 30 to 60 minutes of exercise in hot conditions compared to the same exercise in cooler temperatures, even when the workload stays exactly the same. That means your perceived effort and your actual physiological strain both climb significantly in summer heat — and most people genuinely do not realize how much harder their cardiovascular system is working until they understand this mechanism.
Humidity makes this dramatically worse than heat alone. Sweat only cools the body effectively when it evaporates from the skin — and high humidity slows or prevents that evaporation, meaning sweat just sits on the skin without doing its job. This is exactly why a 90-degree day with 70 percent humidity feels far more punishing than a 95-degree day with 20 percent humidity, even though the actual air temperature is lower. The heat index — which factors in both temperature and humidity — is a far more useful number for summer training decisions than air temperature alone.
The Best Times to Train Outdoors During Summer
Timing is genuinely one of the most important and most overlooked variables in safe summer exercise — and it is one of the easiest adjustments to make once you understand why it matters so much.
Early morning, before 9 AM, is consistently the best window for outdoor summer training. Overnight cooling typically brings temperatures down to their daily low right around sunrise, and the sun’s intensity is still relatively low in those first hours of daylight. I have built my own studio appointment hours around this exact principle — training sessions starting as early as 5 AM take full advantage of the coolest, safest part of the Georgia summer day.
Evening, after 7 PM, is the second-best window, though it comes with a caveat. Even after the sun goes down, asphalt, concrete, and other urban surfaces retain heat absorbed throughout the day and continue radiating that heat for hours — meaning evening outdoor temperatures, especially in paved areas, can stay uncomfortably high well into the night. Grass and shaded natural areas cool down more effectively than urban hardscapes.
Midday, between 11 AM and 4 PM, should be avoided for any meaningful outdoor exercise intensity during Georgia summer months. This window combines peak air temperature, peak UV intensity, and typically peak humidity — the worst possible combination for safe outdoor training. If midday is the only time available, indoor training or significantly reduced intensity and duration outdoors is the smarter call.
Heat Acclimation — How Your Body Adapts and Why It Takes Time
One of the most physiologically interesting things about training in heat is that the human body genuinely adapts to it over time through a process called heat acclimation — and understanding this process changes how you should approach the first few weeks of summer training every single year.
Heat acclimation typically develops over 10 to 14 days of consistent heat exposure combined with exercise. During that adaptation period, several measurable physiological changes occur. Sweat rate increases, allowing more effective cooling. Sweat becomes more dilute, meaning the body retains more sodium per liter of sweat produced — which is actually the opposite pattern of what many people assume happens. Plasma volume increases, improving the cardiovascular system’s ability to simultaneously supply working muscles and cooling mechanisms. Core body temperature threshold for sweating onset actually drops, meaning an acclimated person starts sweating sooner and at a lower body temperature than an unacclimated person — which sounds counterintuitive but is actually a more efficient cooling response.
The practical implication here is significant. The first hot week of summer is genuinely the most dangerous training window of the entire season — because the body has not yet adapted to the heat stress, regardless of how fit a person is in general. I always tell my clients that early June training intensity should be noticeably more conservative than late July training intensity, even if the temperatures are similar, simply because the body has had weeks to acclimate by the time late July arrives.
If you are returning to outdoor summer training after a period of mostly indoor exercise, treat the first two weeks as a deliberate acclimation period — shorter duration, lower intensity, and more frequent breaks than you might think you need. This is not weakness. This is smart physiological strategy that pays off across the entire summer training season.
Practical Strategies for Training Safely in Summer Heat
Beyond timing and acclimation, there are specific, practical strategies that make a real difference in how safely and effectively you can train outdoors once the heat sets in.
Reduce intensity before reducing duration. When heat and humidity climb, the smartest adjustment is typically to lower your training intensity rather than cutting your session short entirely. A 45-minute walk at a comfortable pace is safer and often more productive in heat than a 20-minute attempt at your normal cooler-weather running pace.
Wear light-colored, moisture-wicking, loose-fitting clothing. Dark colors absorb heat from the sun. Tight clothing restricts airflow needed for sweat evaporation. Cotton holds moisture against the skin rather than allowing it to evaporate efficiently. These details matter more in summer heat than most people realize.
Use shaded routes whenever possible. Tree cover can reduce perceived heat significantly compared to direct sun exposure, even when air temperature is identical. Planning outdoor routes with shade in mind is a simple strategy that makes a measurable difference in training comfort and safety.
Monitor the heat index, not just the temperature. Most weather apps display the heat index alongside actual air temperature. A heat index above 90 degrees warrants real caution. Above 103 degrees, the National Weather Service classifies conditions as a danger zone where heat-related illness becomes a genuine and elevated risk for anyone exercising outdoors.
Build in shaded or air-conditioned breaks during longer sessions. For training sessions lasting longer than 30 to 45 minutes in significant heat, planning a brief break in shade or air conditioning partway through gives your cardiovascular system a chance to recover before continuing.
Pay attention to how you feel, not just your planned workout. This sounds obvious, but it is the single most important strategy and the one most frequently ignored. If dizziness, unusual fatigue, headache, or nausea develop during outdoor summer exercise, stopping immediately is always the right call — regardless of how much of the planned workout remains.
Special Considerations for Adults Over 50
The men and women I coach who are over 50 — including the former athletes among them who remember training through summer heat in their younger years without much concern — need to understand that heat tolerance genuinely changes with age, and this is simply physiological reality rather than a reflection of fitness level or toughness.
Sweat gland function tends to decline gradually with age, meaning older adults often have a somewhat reduced cooling capacity compared to younger adults at the same fitness level. Thirst sensation also becomes less reliable with age — many older adults do not feel thirsty even when meaningfully dehydrated, which is why proactive hydration scheduling matters more than relying on thirst as a guide. Certain common medications — including some blood pressure medications and diuretics — can further affect fluid balance and heat tolerance, which is worth discussing with your physician if you are managing those conditions and plan to train outdoors through the summer.
None of this means adults over 50 should avoid outdoor summer training. It means the timing, intensity, and hydration strategies discussed throughout this post matter more for this population, not less. The early morning training window, the gradual heat acclimation period, and the proactive hydration approach are not optional extras for this group — they are foundational components of training safely and effectively through the summer months.
Warning Signs That Mean It’s Time to Stop
I covered this in more detail in my hydration post, but it is worth repeating because recognizing these signs quickly is genuinely one of the most important skills in safe summer training. Early warning signs include unusual fatigue relative to the workout intensity, headache, dizziness, and excessive thirst. More serious signs — heavy sweating combined with weakness, cool clammy skin, nausea, muscle cramping, and a fast but weak pulse — indicate heat exhaustion and require stopping immediately, moving to a cool environment, and beginning fluid and electrolyte replacement. Confusion, hot dry skin, and a rapid strong pulse indicate heat stroke, which is a genuine medical emergency requiring immediate professional attention.
The principle I always emphasize with my clients is that stopping a workout early because of heat-related warning signs is never a failure. It is the exact opposite — it is smart, disciplined training awareness that keeps you healthy and able to train again tomorrow.
